FRAZEE (KDLM) – The Frazee Hornets boy’s basketball team knocked off undefeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Friday night, 58-52.
The D-G-F Rebels were ranked 15th in the Minnesota State High School League standings. With the win, the Hornets moved to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in the Heart of the Lakes Conference. The Rebels moved to 3-1, 3-1, after the Frazee contest.
Frazee Head Coach Hunter Graham attributed the win to solid play in more than one key success area. “We limited our turnovers, scored on the transitions, and just played smart. We did well working with what their defense was allowing us,” Graham said.
Taking a look at the numbers, Frazee outscored the Rebels 18-8 in transition points. The Hornets shot 45 percent from the floor (19 of 36) to 34 for D-G-F (16 of 33), and shot 26 percent (4 of 15) from beyond the arc to the 13 percent (3 of 22) for D-G-F. The Rebels showed a significant advantage from the free throw line, shooting 78 percent (11 of 14) to just 47 percent (8 of 17) for Frazee.
Leading the scoring charge for the Hornets was Jack Courneya with 22; Broden Fleisher, 16; Justin Courneya, 9; Reid Eckert, 5; George Flynn, 4; Nathan Johannsen, 2. Flynn had 11 rebounds, and Eckert had 9. Fleisher had six assists.
“Defensively we rebounded the ball very well and created good pressure against them. We were able to take away many of the things they were good at playing,” Graham said. “Our team is playing good defensive basketball right now. We’re boxing out, covering well and defending well. If we need to improve in one area right now, move our feet. We’re playing with our hands too often,” Graham said.
Now facing two road games, at Staples-Motley on Tuesday and Breckenridge on Thursday, Graham said he’s learned the value of the Hornet home games.
“Playing in an empty gym, there’s no real home court advantage in most cases, but I will say that our gym, being smaller and having fans closer to the floor is the best I’ve experienced.”
