DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The National Weather Service is warning residents to be cautious venturing outside this weekend as very cold conditions are expected for a lengthy period of time starting this weekend lasting into next week.
A Windchill Watch goes into effect, Friday at 6pm through Tuesday with windchills expected as low as 45 below. There is a likely chance much of the Lakes Area will remain below zero all day between Saturday and Tuesday. These persistent subzero temperatures may even linger beyond Tuesday next week.
Exposure to low windchills can cause frostbite; exposed skin can freeze within 10 minutes with windchills of -35 to –50. The National Weather Service recommends dressing appropriately, avoid staying in the cold too long and keeping travel to a minimum if possible.
