Girls Hockey Earns Their First Win of the Season

Detroit Lakes girls hockey at International Falls

INTERNATIONAL FALLS (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes traveled to International Falls on Friday and picked up their first win of the season as they shutout the Broncos 5-0 at Bronco Arena.

The Lakers, who were hungry for a victory after falling in their first game of the season, came out strong with a goal 56 seconds into the game scored by Junior defender Adisyn Strand. The Lakers scored three more goals in the 1st period, with Madi Olson, 8th grader Kaydence Thorsteinson (first career goal), and Hadlee Justesen finding the back of the net. The Lakers added one more in the 2nd period, with Sophomore Ella Hess scoring her first goal of the season. Junior Emma Coley led the Lakers in the assists statistics with four helpers.

Senior goalie Leah Honer turned away all 17 shots by the Broncos to record the win and her 1st shutout of the year. Offensively Detroit Lakes peppered Bronco goalie Naomi Carradice, recording 55 shots in the winning effort.

The Lakers moved to 1-1 on the season and will return to action on Thursday when they take on a section opponent in East Grand Forks. International Falls falls to 0-3 and will return to action on Thursday against Eveleth-Gilbert.

Wrestling: The No. 3 ranked Lakers traveled to Milaca to take part in a triangular on Friday taking on Milaca and Pierz. Detroit Lakes was able to sweep the competition as they beat Pierz 48-28 and took down Milaca 64-12. The Lakers will travel to Fosston on Thursday taking on Fosston-Bagley and Thief River Falls in a triangular. Those matches can be heard on KDLM on Thursday.

Dance: The Lakers hosted the Mid State Dance Competion on Friday night at the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium. The Lakers finished in 1st place in the Jazz competition and finished in 3rd place in the High Kick competition.

Kick: 1-Crosby-Ironton, 2-Pequot Lakes, 3-Detroit Lakes

Next up, Detroit Lakes will travel to Moorhead on January 30th for an invite.

Gymnastics: The Laker gymnastics team fell to Bemidji on Saturday afternoon 141.825-132.3 in a dual meet at the Gym Bin in Bemidji on Saturday afternoon. Detroit Lakes will return to action on Tuesday when they host Perham.
