Fatal Traffic Accidents Up in 2020 Across Minnesota

Jan 6, 2021 | 11:11 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Fatal traffic accidents across the state of Minnesota were up in 2020 despite less traffic on the roadways due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

There were 364 deaths on Minnesota roadways in 2019, Jesse Grabow with the Minnesota State Patrol says preliminary numbers indicate 394 deaths occurred in 2020 on Minnesota roadways.

“We were making really good progress over the last number of years as far as trending downwards and 2020 was not the direction we want to be going. One fatal crash is too many and they’re preventable,” says Grabow.

At least 30 of the deaths were known to be distraction-related and 118 were speed-related. The State Patrol says the number of tickets written for drivers going over 100 mph increased by 94 percent in 2020, with one driver being cited for going 153 mph.
