Area Schools Compete at Milaca Mega Meet

MILACA, MN (KDLM) – One of the busiest weekends in high school cross country continued on Saturday. One day after the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday afternoon, 96 boys teams and 78 girls teams descended on Milaca for the annual Mega Meet.

Races began at 10:00 on Saturday morning in a day that saw 19 races from 7th grade through varsity start every 15 minutes.

Area schools West Central, Nevis, Ada-Borup-NCW, Wadena-Deer Creek, Otter Tail Central, and Parkers Prairie ran in the Divison 4 (small school) race. West Central Area finished third with 104 points. Nevis finished eighth, Ada-Borup finished 11th, WDC was 13th, OTC was 17th, and Parkers Prairie finished 21st out of 26 teams.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls team finished second overall in the Divison 4 race, with 141 points. West Central Area finished 7th, United North Central finished 13th, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle placed 17th, and Ada-Borup-NCW finished 19th out of 20 teams.

Perham eeked out a win over Park Rapids in the Divison 3 race. Perham, without top runner Jakob McCleary (who finished 10th at the Griak race the day before), finished with a score of 96 points…two points ahead of Park Rapids. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton finished 8th overall in the 24-team field. Sophomore Caden Doll of Perham finished fourth with a time of 17:20. Sophomore Noah Huot of Park Rapids finished sixth with a time of 17:22.

The Perham girls cross country team took second place in Milaca on Saturday with a score of 56 points. St. Cloud Cathedral won the Division 3 girls race with 52 points. The Park Rapids girls took 13th place. Perham placed four runners score in the top ten, led by eighth-grader Gracie Morris’ fourth-place finish (19:40).

Detroit Lakes finished 20th in the Division 2 boys race. Senior Cole Weber paced the Lakers with a time of 18:30 and a 64th place finish. Sophomores Braydon Francis and Micah Barberg finished 105th (19:27) and 127th (20:03), respectively. Big Lake won the Divison 2 race with a score of 89 points, Fargo North finished second with an even 100.

The Detroit Lakes girls team finished 14th overall in their Division 2 race with 315 points. Junior Julia Steffl finished 37th with a time of 21:17, two seconds ahead of teammate and 39th place finisher freshman Isla Pender. Sophomore Sadie Johnson finished 70th with a time of 22:20. Marshall won the Divison 2 race with 77 points. Monticello was second with 130, Fargo North was third with 141. The Laker cross country teams next meet is Thursday, September 30th at Fergus Falls.
